Happy New Ears

The Italian composer Fausto Romitelli , who died in 2004 at the tender age of 41, said: »Central to my compositions is my attempt to see sound as material, into which one can delve and forge its physical characteristics and the way they are perceived: how granular, thick, full of holes, illuminating, taut or elastic is the sound?«  He sees his works as sculptures. He was strongly influenced by Francis Bacon's fascinating paintings. He studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan and Accademia Chigiana in Siena before going to Paris in 1991 and working at IRCAM. Two leading representatives of Musique spectrale, Gérard Grisey and Hugues Dufort, were among his most important teachers. Rock music, too, crept into his creative thinking.
