The tenor Hans-Jürgen Schöpflin sang the role of Coppelius at the world premiere, and first run of performances of this production, of Scartazzini's Der Sandmann / The Sandman at Theater Basel in 2012. His roles at Oper Frankfurt have included Edmund in Reimann's Lear Right-Hand in the world premiere of Navok's An unserem Fluss, Sir Philip in Owen Wingrave, Quint in The Turn of the Screw and Johansson in Reimann's Die Gespenstersonate / The Ghost Sonata. This season he also sings Dr. Cajus in the revival of Falstaff. This award winning artist has made a name for him self as a fine interpreter of 20th and 21st century music. Theatres where he has appeared recently have included the Opéra National in Paris, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, in Karlsruhe, St. Gallen and the Komische Oper Berlin. He recently took part in Peter Konwitschny's Falsche Welt, Dir trau ich nicht! / False world, I don't trust you at the Bergen International Festival and Theater Trier and sang Aschenbach in Britten's Death in Venice at Nice Opera, a role he sang at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in a production which was voted Best Production of 2008 in Spain, and for which he received the 2007 Theatre Oscar – Best Singer of the Year - from critics of the Bundesland NRW. In 2012 he sang in Weill's Berlin Requiem for Netherlands Radio.
